McPherson High’s Cord Nestor and Jake Puhalla will be teammates for at least two more years.
Nestor and Puhalla signed football letters of intent Wednesday morning with Hutchinson Community College, as they’ll go from one successful program to another.
Nestor and Puhalla toiled in the trenches for the Bullpups of coach Tom Young. Nestor earned honors for his play in the offensive line while Puhalla was decorated for his defensive skills.
Nestor, 6-3 and 250 pounds, was a first-team AVCTL selection this season.
“It’s just a good school all-around,” Nestor said. “They have good facilities, a good team and good coaches.”
Nestor is impressed with HCC head coach Rion Rhoades.
“He’s really good, he’s a nice guy,” Nestor said. “He’s built a good team. I think he’ll work us hard.”
Nestor will be majoring in fire science.
Puhalla, 6-4 and he played at 240 pounds during the football season, was like Nestor in that he started for two years.
“It’s a good school and really close to home,” Puhalla said. “They won their bowl game and they’re a really good program. I’m looking forward to it.”
Puhalla said between now and next fall, he’s going to hit the weights.
“I have to get bigger and stronger,” he said. “I have to pack on some pounds.”
Puhalla also has been a member of the MHS wrestling team, qualifying for state last year.
Puhalla will major in wildlife management.
