The Empire District Electric Company reports that as of 9:00 p.m. approximately 14,000 customers remain without service. By utilizing storm path data from FEMA, Empire has established that approximately 10,000 customers are within the tornado-devastated area in Joplin. A substantial number of these customers will not be able to accept service from Empire for the foreseeable future.
As crews bring customers back on service and citizens begin cleaning up damaged property, Empire reminds customers to use extreme caution with equipment near overhead lines. Individuals and contractors need to keep a safe distance of at least ten feet from overhead lines as these can be energized. Also, special attention needs to be paid to the underground utility lines. Customers are encouraged to call 811 to have underground services marked before clean up begins.
