On the mat, Arkansas City won only one more match than McPherson High here Thursday night.
The difference was, the majority of the Bulldogs’ wins were by falls, while the Bullpups’ wins were mainly by decisions.
The result was a 45-24 Bulldog victory in the season opener for both teams.
“It was a typical first match,” MHS coach Rich Settle said. “I’m not real dissatisfied. We’ve got some growing to do in some weights. We have some kids who are advanced and it showed.”
The Bullpups’ returning veterans led the way. State returnees Tim Prescott, Beau Johnson, Tyler Davis and Zach Lanning all triumphed, while Parker Johnson and Cole Luttig also were victorious. Lanning and Parker Johnson won by falls.
Five of Arkansas City’s seven wins came by pins, with another one a decision and the other a forfeit.
“I think a couple of those we lost to, we’ll come back and beat those kids later in the year,” Settle said. “Ark City has some quality kids, some tough kids.”
The Bullpups host a JV meet at 9 a.m. Saturday and the varsity’s next action is Thursday at Campus.
