Hopefully it’s a harbinger of things to come.
McPherson High’s volleyball team reeled off five straight victories Saturday in the AVCTL Preseason Tournament before losing its finale to finish the long day with a 5-1 record.
No places were awarded, but MHS had the second-best record, as Bryan Otte’s Valley Center Hornets were the only team to go 6-0.
“We had great leadership and chemistry from our girls,” MHS coach Christy Doile said. “I was very proud to see their determination.”
MHS recorded wins over Hutchinson (25-13, 25-7), Salina Central (25-11, 25-21), Campus 25-20, 25-27, 25-22), Buhler (25-20, 17-25, 25-8) and Andover (25-12, 25-10). The loss came against Salina South, a match where MHS won the first game 25-16, but then lost 20-25 and 16-25.
The Bullpups pretty much dominated the first two matches, but Doile said Campus is much improved and put up a challenge. “That match could have gone either way and our girls stepped up and finished plays,” Doile said.
Buhler waged a good fight, while the Bullpups had no trouble with Andover.
Against Salina South, the Bullpups played well to win the first game, but the momentum stalled.
“We battled hard, but didn’t get any breaks and failed to execute on serve receive, hitting and serving at points in the game where we needed it,” Doile said. “We had a bad feeling at the end of the match. The girls were disappointed.  We didn’t finish or play as well as we know we can. I applauded their effort, success of game 1 and the entire day.  We have the opportunity to see them again at our home tournament and sub-state.”
Leaders:
• Bethany Farres had 58 kills, with Katelyn Loecker recording 22.
• Kelcie Scott had 70 assists.
• Tiffany Snyder had 32 digs and Tashley Snyder had 30.
• Tashley Snyder had 13 aces, Sophie Simon had 12 and Farres had 11.
Farres and Tashley Snyder combined for 24 aces and missed a combined three serves the entire day.
The Bullpups hope to keep the momentum going today at Goddard.
