Smoky Valley volleyball coach Doug Schneider has had to replace the majority of his team from last year’s unit that won 25 matches.
But the replacements appear to be more than capable, as the Vikings opened their season Saturday with a second-place finish in the Pratt Invitational.
The Vikings’ wins in pool play came against Lyons (18-25, 25-20, 25-13), Sterling (25-22, 25-21) and Halstead (25-21, 25-22). They lost to Hillsboro (23-25, 25-18, 17-25).
In bracket play, the Vikings knocked off Hesston (27-25, 25-17) before losing again to Hillsboro (22-25, 16-26).
“I was really pleased with how we improved as the day wore on,” Schneider said. “I thought we got stronger and stronger with each new set. We are still young and made some youthful mistakes, but the true character of this team is how we respond to the mistakes we make and how we handle the next point and we did that very well. It was a great first outing for us.”
Viking standout Lori Dauer dislocated her shoulder in the championship match. It’s a recurring injury, and Schneider said the team would be monitoring it.
