Now is the time to view the Rocky Mountain elk at Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, located six miles north of Canton.
The largest herd of elk on a refuge in Kansas make Maxwell their home. Elk are seen only in winter from December through March. The kickoff to the elk viewing season will be Elk Days Jan. 10 at the Friends of Maxwell Tour Center.
Activities include: Elk tour from 11 a.m. to  2 p.m. Visitors can board the enclosed winter tram to view the elk and buffalo through the winter. Lunch of chili, vegetable soup, relishes and pie is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Free-will donations will go to support the educational programs and special events.
