McPherson High’s Nathan Wehrman and Mark Gayer are expected to make up one of the better doubles teams in Class 5A this season.
They started on the right foot here Thursday by taking first place in a strong McPherson Invitational field.
Wehrman combined with Cody Fawl to take fourth in the state last year. Gayer was an AVCTL doubles champiin 2008.
They combined to go 3-0 on a cold-and-windy day, defeating Buhler’s Aaron Peak and Michael Mitchell 8-2 in the title match.
The Bullpups, who have no seniors on their roster, also received a third from Cory Horton and Tyler Singleton at No. 2 doubles, as they went 2-1 on the day.
In singles, Aden Lindholm went 0-3 at No. 1, while Daniel Allmon was 1-2 at No. 2 to take fourth.
The Bullpups scored 17 points to take third behind Winfield (28) and Salina South (21). Other scores were Newton (13), Buhler (12), Great Bend (12), Derby (9) and Hays (4).
“I was glad that we got it in,” said MHS coach Doug Gayer, as the meet danced around raindrops near the end of the day. “We did well in doubles. I felt bad for Aden because we’re going to have to have guys take turns at No. 1 singles since we’re going to go strong in doubles.”
The Bullpups will be off until Thursday when they go to Goddard for a tournament.
