McPherson College men’s basketball coach Tim Swartzendruber has announced the signing of Mason Hewitt of Norwich to a letter of intent.
The 6-5, 230-pound Hewitt was a unanimous All-Heart of the Plains and honorable mention All-State selection following his junior season for coach Dale Harper at Norwich High School.
He was averaging 23 points and 11 rebounds per game when his senior season came to a premature end due to an injury.
“I am very excited to sign someone with the overall athleticism of Mason,”  Swartzendruber said. “He was a dominating player at his level and we believe he can be a very good player in our program.  His outgoing personality and ability to relate to others will make him a great fit at McPherson College.”
A four-year letterwinner in football and basketball, Hewitt was an All-State defensive lineman and honorable mention All-State tight end as a senior for the Eagles. He has been selected to participate in this summer’s Kansas 8-man All-Star game.
He was earlier named to the All-Heart of the Plains first team as a running back and defensive lineman when he compiled 852 yards rushing, 264 yards receiving, and was credited with 75 total tackles including 50 unassisted and 32 for lost yardage.
Hewitt previously received All-League honors as a tight end and defensive end as a sophomore as well as All-League and honorable mention All-State recognition as a junior defensive lineman.
He is the son of Mitch and Shelly Hewitt of Norwich.  He plans to major in physical education.
