Tie on those running shoes, air up those bike tires and get in shape for swimming laps! United Way of McPherson County is getting ready for its third annual triathlon, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15. This fund-raising event will help support human needs programs in McPherson County.
As with last year’s triathlon, each event will begin and end at the McPherson Water Park. The competition includes a 200-meter swim, seven-mile bike ride and a two-mile run.
“We had such a great turnout last year. Over 130 athletes from McPherson as well as across Kansas participated in 2008” said Bart Regier, 2009 Triathlon Committee Co-Chair.
Competitors can pre-register as an individual ($30) or a three-person team ($60). Registration fees the day of competition are $40 for individuals and $70 for three-person teams. Registration forms are available at the United Way office or online at www.ymca-mrc.com. Early registration is preferred in order to be ranked.
Residents shouldn’t let the swimming event stop them from registering. If residents wish to compete and have a biker and runner, the triathlon committee can provide a swimmer to complete a team.
“We have volunteers from the McPherson Aqua Pups who are willing to be a part of a team needing a swimmer” stated Regier. Just send in the registration form, listing the two competitors for your team and indicate “swimmer needed.”
The race begins at 8 a.m. sharp. Race day check-in will be at the McPherson Water Park from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. Bike racks will be provided.
The top three male and female finishers and the first place team will receive awards.
Volunteers will be needed along the bike and run routes, making sure competitors are safe and following the correct routes. If you would like to volunteer, please call the United Way office at 241-5152.
All competitors and volunteers will receive a T-shirt!
Come join the fun and help the community. Be a competitor, be a volunteer, or just come watch. Competitors, spectators and volunteers are all guarentted to have a great time.
