WINFIELD -- The first McPherson High girls varsity soccer game of the Gary Buum era was a smashing success.

The Bullpups opened their season Tuesday with a 3-0 blanking of Winfield.

Buum said the team “started a little sluggish,” but picked up the pace in the second half.

MHS led 1-0 at recess.

Claire Schwindt and Colleen O’Connor both scored a goal and assisted on a goal. Tess Ingermanson had the other goal, while Jena Larzalere had an assist.

Buum praised the play of a talented group of freshmen, including O’Connor, Taylor Lummus, Tashley Snyder and Hailey Ruder.

There was no JV game.

MHS will make its home debut Thursday against Great Bend, with the JV playing at 6, followed by the varsity at approximately 7:30.

MHS then will host a three-day tournament next week.
