GALVA- Melvern A. “Mel” Goering was born in rural Montezuma on Jan.12, 1930, and passed away on April 26, 2010. Mel graduated from Galva High School in 1947. He attended Bethel College for three years. For almost 60 years, he farmed with his brother Virgil Goering and engaged in other businesses with his brothers. Mel married Erma Buller in 1954. They spent 55 wonderful years together.
Mel is survived by his wife Erma of the home in rural Galva; by his son Dick J. Goering, his wife Hope and their children, Melanie and Joe, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, by his son Jim H. Goering, his wife Ruthie and their sons John and Jeremy of Valley Center, by his son-in-law, Bryan Otte (who was married to Mel and Erma’s daughter, Cindy Lou Otte, who passed away in October of 2009) and their daughter Emily of Valley Center; by his brothers, Virgil Goering of Galva, Marvin Goering of McPherson and Kenneth Goering of Galva; by extended family and many friends. Mel was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy Lou Otte, by his parents, Joe J.F. and Emma Schrag Goering, his brothers, Merlin and Duane Goering, his sister, Margaret Schrag and his brother-in-law, Walter Schrag. The visitation at the Moundridge Funeral Home will be Wednesday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The funeral service will be at the Eden Mennonite Church, rural Moundridge, on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at 11 a.m. preceded by a graveside service in the Eden Church Cemetery (adjacent to the Eden Mennonite Church) at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
