On some mornings, it’s only 20 minutes but that doesn’t bother Light Capitol Kiwanis member Sherry Perdeauville, sometimes that’s all it takes.
On Tuesday, Perdeauville and a handful of other Kiwanis members enjoyed breakfast and crafts with about 23 students at Roosevelt Elementary School. Kiwanis members have been visiting and eating with Roosevelt students twice a month for the past seven years through the club’s Breakfast Buddies program.
Some mornings, the kids don’t arrive till 20-till and that doesn’t leave much time for them to finish their breakfast and the planned craft activity for that morning. But club members know that even 20 minutes of interaction with an adult can make a world of difference for some of the students.
“We don’t always get a lot of time with the kids,” Perdeauville said. “But we take advantage of the opportunity to interact with the kids. It gives them another adult to interact with. We try to listen to the kids and hear about their programs or sometimes something exciting that’s going on.”
