McPherson’s firemen and policemen are taking to the lanes for a good cause. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. this Saturday, May 1, the McPherson Fire Department will be taking on the McPherson Police Department in a bowling benefit at Starlite Lanes.
The bowling benefit is a fund-raiser for the Fireman and Police Benefit Fund, which helps pay for items and equipment not covered by the city.
Fire chief Dennis Thrower said items purchased through the fund for his department would include paying for doctors appointments for injured firemen, paying for smoke detectors and batteries to give away to residents and retirement gifts to outgoing firemen.
For the police department, Police Chief Dennis Shaw said money from the fund goes to funding of the DARE program and assistance with medical costs for injured officers.
Cliff Hutts, Starlite Lanes owner, said he is proud to help raise money for these “funds that are so important to our police and firemen.”
During the benefit, two, four-person teams from both the fire department and police department will battle it out in a three- game tournament. While the teams bowl, Starlite Lanes will be donating food and drinks.
The community is invited and encouraged to watch the teams battle it out. All money taken it in will be donated to the McPherson Fireman’s Benefit and McPherson Police Benefit Fund.
