Same song, second verse.
And in both cases, the victories were perhaps the most important of the year.
McPherson High’s soccer team knocked off Andover 2-0 last Thursday to win the AVCTL Division II?title.
On Tuesday, the two teams met here again, and this time the Bullpups were just as convincing, as their 3-1 victory propelled them into the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.
MHS (10-6-1) advances to Liberal for Thursday’s 6:30 p.m. second-round game.
“We played really good in the first half. We came out ready to play,” first-year MHS coach Chris Adrian said.
Luke Reber energized the Bullpups by scoring just 2:31 into the game and Cory Horton made it 2-0 before the half.
Andover cut the lead in half 10 minutes into the second half, as Brock Miller took an Alexander Strack pass to make the deposit.
“The second half, we started to get away from what was working for us,” Adrian said.
But MHS was able to breathe a sigh of relief with 18 minutes left, as Sawyer Hambley took a nice pass from Xzavier Torres to finish what proved to be an insurance score.
MHS now has a major task ahead as it makes the 218-mile journey to Liberal.
“They beat us last year 2-0 to end our season, so we’re looking forward to going back there,” Adrian said.
