McPherson College’s men’s basketball team is going to step up  -- way up -- in competition this weekend when it competes in the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Classic.
The Bulldogs play classic host Platteville at 8 p.m. on Saturday, then play St. Olaf University in a 1 p.m. Sunday matinee. Both schools are classified as NCAA Division III.
“Wisconsin-Platteville is huge,” said Mac coach Tim Swartzendruber, whose team goes into tourney play with a 6-2 record. “They have a transfer, Joe Allen, who is 6-6 and played at Wisconsin-Milwaukee last year. He’s a big body and very athletic.”
Swartzendruber said Platteville, 3-0 on the year, may be the most methodical team the Bulldogs play, as it likes to run down the shot clock. It’s also a defensive-minded team, having given up only 53 points a game so far.
St. Olaf, 3-0 on the year, is more up tempo than Platteville and features Bobby Fong, who  is averaging 23 points a game. He is one of four players averaging in double figures, as the team averages 81.
