In the past, McPherson High’s boys swimming team has just been glad to be at the state meet.
But beginning Friday at Topeka’s Hummer Sports Complex, the Bullpups are more than just happy to be a part of the festivities. They want to be a major player in the proceedings.
MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher believes she has several potential entries who can advance to the final eight, or least the round of 16.
“We are very excited about the fact that we have so many races that have qualified for state,” Fisher said. “In looking at the results from last year, we are in a much better position to get into both the top 8 (finals) and the consolation finals (spots 9-16).”
Fisher said Aaron Marshall in the 50 freestyle, Derick Goodson in the 100 freestyle and Kyle Cottrell in the 100 butterfly are all serious contenders for the top eight.
Fisher also believes the Bullpups’ relay teams can make one of the two medal rounds, as MHS has a chance for its best-ever showing.
Swimming preliminaries Friday begin at 4:30 p.m., and Saturday’s finals also begin at 4:30.
