On Senior Night, the only senior on McPherson College’s women’s basketball team was not going to let the Bulldogs lose.
Kristen Ozbun, Mac’s third all-time leading scorer, willed the Bulldogs to a 57-44 victory over Saint Mary.
Mac is now 4-13 in the KCAC and tied with Bethany for eighth place. The only way the Bulldogs can make the playoffs is to upset KCAC co-leader Sterling on the road Saturday and Bethany would have to lose at home to Tabor since it owns the tiebreaker.
Ozbun scored 23 points, 14 in the first half when the Bulldogs doubled the cold-shooting Spires, 24-12.
“She put us on her back, especially in the first half,” said Mac coach Cy Rolfs, whose team is now 6-21 overall. “I can’t say enough about her. She did a great job and hit some big free throws.”
The Bulldogs were on cruise control, leading 39-22 with 9:26 left in the game, but the Spires unleashed a barrage of 3-pointers to get as close as six, 46-40. But the Bulldogs were money at the line down the stretch, sinking 9 of 10.
“Kristen played great and everybody around her stepped up,” Rolfs said.
Elice Frey added 13 points and seven rebounds for Mac, while Brittany Gardner scored 14 for last-place Saint Mary.
“We had to win tonight and that’s all we knew,” Rolfs said. “Sterling is going to be a big one and we competed well against them the first time. We just have to play loose since we have nothing to lose.”
