Chances of McPherson High qualifying a strong contingent for the state wrestling tournament have been enhanced by the fact only one ranked team will be in the field for Saturday’s Class 5A regional at Hays.
Only Newton -- which is ranked sixth with Emporia -- is in the most recent Top 10 by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association.
It’s the final go-around for MHS coach Rich Settle, who is retiring after this year. And he has several wrestlers who should get through, and there’s generally always a surprise or two.
“I think it’s pretty wide open,” Settle said. “I look for Hays to maybe be a surprise. But we’ve got a chance to get a lot of kids through.”
MHS’ best bets for regional gold would appear to be Kaden Kretzer at 112 (22-11), Tim Prescott at 119 (15-1)  Beau Johnson at 125 (13-7), Zach Lanning at 215 (18-4) and Taylor Krier at heavyweight (24-6). Prescott is ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, while Krier is No. 4. Lanning has been ranked off and on during the year.
Other MHS entries are Troy Crane at 130 (12-13), Cole Luttig at 135 (14-13), Matt Anderson at 140 (6-15), Travis Steenson at 145 (13-15), Dustin Schafer at 152 (1-10), Aaron Elsasser at 160 (9-13), Jordan Sponsel at 181 (1-19) and Dalton Clark at 189 (16-12).
The action begins at 9 a.m.
