McPherson High’s girls entered Monday’s make-up game with Derby knowing the Panthers were 0-for-the-season.
And try as they might, the Bullpups didn’t play with their customary energy.
It was a case of sheer talent taking over, as MHS was a 55-29 winner to improve to 16-2 heading into tonight’s 6:00 Senior Night game at the Roundhouse against Valley Center.
“There was no energy from the crowd at all,” said MHS coach Chris Strathman, whose team started the game before a handful of family and a few close friends. “It was interesting. You talk before the game about being ready, but kids are kids. They see that stuff (Derby being 0-17). But tomorrow night we’re going to have to be much sharper, because Valley Center has been playing much better as of late.”
The Bullpups took a page out of the MHS boys’ book as they didn’t have their normal balanced, instead relying on Katelyn Loecker and Casyn Buchman, who scored 21 and 19 points respectively to account for all but 15 Bullpup points.
“Katelyn and Casyn did most of the scoring tonight. I like to have better balance, but it didn’t happen tonight for whatever reason,”?Strathman said. “Our other kids will be ready to shoot the ball tomorrow.”
MHS jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead and was never in any serious danger, up 30-14 at the half and 48-20 after three quarters. Derby did receive 11 points from Michaela Liebst, but she was about the only Panther threat.
The MHS JVs were a 63-22 winner, with Abby Pedersen scoring 14 points, while Paige Regnier and Izzy Moyer added 10.
The freshmen were outlasted 31-25, as Derby scored the final 10 points of the game. Moira Pyle led the Bullpups with nine points.
