The McPherson College track and field team wrapped up its indoor season recently at the Nebraska Tune-up. The Bulldogs came away with two national qualifying times, four season bests and six top 10 finishes.
Javier Ceja entered the meet already qualified for the NAIA Indoor National Championships in the men’s mile run and 3,000 run. He finished third in the men’s 5,000 in 14:56.56, earning a trip to nationals for a third event. His time is the eighth best by an NAIA athlete this season.
McPherson’s second national qualifier was Daniel Sorenson in the men’s 3,000. Sorenson, who was competing in his first meet of the season, ran an 8:42.43 to qualify at the NAIA ‘A’ standard and finished sixth place in the event.
In the men’s mile, Joshua Nilles ran a 4:44.14 to better his previous season best by around nine seconds.
Other notable finishes on the men’s side included a fifth place by Derrick Toney in the high jump (6-5) and a ninth place by Nolan Dreiling  in the shot put (42-8 1/4).
On the women’s side, Breanna Pendleton continues to improve with a weight toss of 48-8 1/4. Teammates Ashley Huizar and Payton Hartman ended the women’s 5,000 in 10th (19:52.51) and 12th (20:38.37) places, respectively.
The Bulldogs return to action March 3-5 at the NAIA Indoor National Championships in Geneva, Ohio. Mac opens its outdoor season with the McPherson College Invite on March 12.
