ARKANSAS CITY -- This one screamed for the running clock rule.
McPherson High’s girls led Arkansas City by 35 at halftime Friday night on their way to a 65-18 rout in the regular-season finale.
The Bullpups finished 18-2, 10-0 in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League’s Division II. MHS also is now 59-3 all-time against the Bulldogs.
The big coin flip to determine the No. 1 seed in next week’s sub-state was to take place this morning. MHS, Salina South and Newton all finished 18-2, so the Bullpups could be the No. 1, 2 or 3 seed. MHS defeated Newton and lost to Salina South, while South and Newton split in their two meetings.
This one was never in doubt, as MHS took off on a 25-0 push midway through the first half to lead 42-7 at the break and from there, Bullpup coach Chris Strathman was able to mix and match with various combinations.
“I thought our girls were very, very sharp in the first half,” Strathman said. “Some of the passing was unbelievable. We had a lot of transition baskets and people were running the floor real well.”
The Bullpups had great balance, as Katelyn Loecker scored 15 points, Casyn Buchman had all 14 of hers in the first half, and Tanner Hein and Sarah Gaeddert added 10 apiece. MHS again bombed away from 3-point, knocking down seven.
The MHS JV team completed a perfect 18-0 season with a 51-24 victory behind 13 points by Ashton Bruner. The freshmen were a 52-29 winner,  with Hannah Willems scoring 12 and Megan Malm adding 11.
