McPherson High’s basketball teams will be home for first-round Class 5A sub-state games Wednesday and Thursday.
The girls are up first, as they’ll host Great Bend at 7 p.m. Wednesday. If the Bullpups win, they’ll play the winner of Newton and Hays at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Salina South for the right to advance to state.
MHS is 18-2 and lost out on Saturday’s coin flip to Salina South, also 18-2.
The Bullpups and Great Bend (9-11) already have played once this year, with MHS scoring a 67-42 victory at the Roundhouse, a game it made 29 of 53 from the field and the Panthers had no answer inside for Katelyn Loecker, who tallied 21 points.
An MHS victory most likely would set up a title game with Newton, which also is 18-2. The Bullpups edged the Railers at Newton in an earlier meeting.
On Thursday, the Bullpup boys take center stage as they’ll host Newton at 7 p.m. MHS is 19-1, while Newton is 2-18, one of those losses a 30-point setback to the Bullpups, who played that game without Jack Pyle, who was out with an injury.
A victory by the Bullpups and they would play at 5:30 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Hays and Great Bend, a team the Bullpups throttled 75-43 earlier in the year.
