Maybe it was an Arkansas City hangover.
Or maybe it was the bitter-cold conditions.
Whatever the reason, McPherson High’s softball team struggled early on here Tuesday against Andover.
But once the Bullpups warmed up, they dominated the Trojans for a sweep to move to 7-1 on the year.
MHS, coming off an emotional sweep of high-powered Arkansas City, trailed 3-0 after 3 1/2 innings of the first game before exploding for five runs to key a 7-4 victory.
“We played a lot of small ball with the wind blowing and their lack of bunt coverage,” MHS coach Cody Stucky said of the five-run rally. “We finally started to get some bunts down and that helped us get things rolling.”
The big hit, though, was a rocket by Kayley Schmidt that drove in two runs.
The Bullpups also ran the bases well, pilfering eight sacks.
Kasee Tully, Morgan Swisher and Paige Regnier all had two hits for MHS. Swisher went the distance, fanning five.
MHS then had little trouble in the nightcap, 16-1.
The Bullpups scored four runs in the first inning and were never threatened.
Riley Campbell blasted a homer for the game’s highlight, with MHS’ other 13 hits being singles.
Offensive leaders were Emily Davis (3 for 4, three runs scored), Campbell (two hits, three RBI), Mariah Wedel (two hits, two RBI), Swisher (two hits, two RBI), Schmidt (two hits) and Tiffany Snyder (two RBI).
Swisher pitched the first three innings before Regnier came on to throw the final frame in her first action on the mound this year.
“The girls did a nice job of grinding out an ugly win in the first game and then jumping all over them from the start of the second game and maintaining a pretty high level of play,” Stucky said. “It’s never fun playing in cold temperatures and strong winds, but they got it done.”
The JV team kept pace with the varsity by sweeping the Trojans, 8-2 and 15-0. Abby Steiner pitched the opener and Laura Wurm dealt zeroes in the nightcap. Wurm and Izzy Moyer had doubles.
MHS plays Thursday at Goddard.
