That light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter and brighter for the McPherson High baseball team.
The Bullpups started the season 0-4, but after Tuesday’s 14-4 and 9-4 sweep of Andover, the Bullpups have climbed to the .500 mark at 5-5, which signifies the halfway point of the season.
“Once again our offense continues to be impressive and our defense committed only three errors in two games,” MHS coach Craig Marshall said. “I thought many individuals played terrific defense, especially Colby Geren in center field with eight putouts.”
The Bullpups jumped on the Trojans in the first game, piling up 11 runs in the first three innings. All that offense made it easy for starter Seth Sterling, who had only one hiccup in a solid performance.
“I thought Seth did a super job on the mound throwing strikes and minimizing damage,” Marshall said.
Jeremy Moore had two doubles and three RBI, and Sterling also had three RBI. Geren, Aaron Marshall, Moore, Sterling and Seth Davenport all had two hits, and Davenport was plunked by a couple of pitches.
In the second game, the Bullpups received two RBI from Kelly Blomberg, two hits and three runs from Steven Gonzalez and two RBI from Geren. Marshall was the winning pitcher, with Gonzalez coming on to close it out. Marshall gave up four runs in the first, three of them unearned, but settled down to fire zeroes.
The Bullpups split in the JV game, losing the opener 21-14 and then wining the nightcap, 12-7.
Jackson Wolf and Jared Reese had three hits apiece in the first game, while Chris Rakowski, Zach Likely and Tanner Hamilton all had two. In the second game, Wolf and Hamilton had three hits, while Jonathan Rogers, Ethan Nadeau and Logan Schrag all had two. Likely was the winning pitcher.
MHS goes on the road Thursday to play Goddard.
