McPherson College’s softball team recorded an important KCAC sweep of intracounty rival Bethany College here Tuesday.
The Swedes had entered the day 9-1 in the KCAC, but Mac’s sweep left Bethany just a game up on three teams, including the Bulldogs. The other teams are Ottawa and Friends.
In the opener, Mac’s Kelsey Dutton spaced seven hits over seven innings in the 2-0 victory. She did not walk a batter and fanned three to best the Swedes’ Stephanie Tyler, who allowed only six hits and walked just one.
The Bulldogs scored single runs in the first and fifth innings, both by leadoff hitter Jamie Gilbert, who had two hits, plus an RBI. Payton Toepfer also had two hits.
In a wild second game that stretched to 11 innings, Sadie Green’s single scored Katie Logan to break an 11-all tie and give the Bulldogs a 12-11 win. Bethany had scored a run in the top of the inning,  but Logan’s RBI single tied the game before Green delivered.
Logan had a huge game with four hits, four runs scored and two RBI. Dutton also had four hits and two RBI. Green and Ashley Luthye added two hits apiece.
Dutton was the winner in relief.
Mac is now 8-4 in the KCAC and got back to the .500 mark at 20-20. The Bulldogs are home again Saturday at 1 p.m. to take on Ottawa.
