The Inman Scholarship Club is celebrating one year of helping the Inman community.
The club is holding its first annual members banquet at 7 p.m. May 25 at the Best Western Holiday Manor Convention Center in McPherson. The guest speaker for the event is former KU basketball standout and NBA player Wayne Simien.
A social hour will start at 5:45 p.m. and will include a silent auction and a raffle for prizes that include a big screen television and grill.
Farmers National Bank is sponsoring Simien and businesses and individuals can sponsor tables of eight. Individual tickets can also be purchased for $19.50 each.
Anyone purchasing a table or individual tickets must be an Inman Scholarship Club member. Silver-level membership are $100 and family memberships are $50 each.
All proceeds from the event will go to the Inman Scholarship Club to provide scholarships for Inman students and families.
The club, which is overseen by a community board of directors, provides financial assistance to individuals and families for education, recreation, health needs, opportunities and incidental expenses.
Inman resident, father and coach Jon Brown started the organization in 2010 to help alleviate the financial barriers that often prevent students and families from participating in events and meeting basic needs.
“There are so many kids that qualify for free lunches through the school and other government programs but the parents have so much on their plate and don’t have time to fill out all the paperwork,” Brown said. “All this takes is a phone call or email and the paperwork to participate in the sport or activity.”
Since its inception in 2010, the scholarship club has awarded 24 scholarships including four scholarships to help families with basic Christmas necessities.
