Time and again, McPherson High’s girls soccer team turned back the challenge of Salina Central Thursday night.
But finally, after 82 mintutes and on their 26th shot attempt of the game, the Mustangs connected.
Devon Schmitz scored two minutes into overtime for Salina Central as the Mustangs won the tense overtime battle, 1-0.
“Although this loss was a tough pill to swallow, I really could not be more proud of the way the girls played the second half,” MHS coach Chris Adrian said. “They should feel proud of the way they represented their team and school. We had three golden opportunities to score, but just couldn’t get them to go. It was a great display of team soccer. If the team can duplicate the second half performance in the coming games, it’s going to be a really fun finish to the season.”
Central won the JV game, 3-0.
The Bullpups, now 8-4, have no time to rest as they play tonight at Andover.
