McPherson High senior Sarah Gaeddert was all prepared to try and walk on to play basketball at Washburn University.

But Truman State University, which like Washburn plays in the MIAA, got in late on the recruiting process. But its pitch was strong and Gaeddert will now take her talents to play for the Kirksville, Mo., school.

“It’s a tough academic school and it has a beautiful campus,” Gaeddert said.

Gaeddert will be joining a Truman State team that is coming off a 12-15 season.

The 6-0 Gaeddert had an outstanding career for the Bullpups, including back-to-back state appearances. This past season, she averaged 6.7 points and 5.3 rebounds, while shooting 48 percent from the field. She also generally drew the opponent’s toughest inside presence, as she excelled on the defensive end. She helped the Bullpups to the league championship and third-place state finish.

Gaeddert earned second-team AVCTL Division II this year after earning first team as a junior. She also was honorable mention All-State each of her last two years, as well as being Academic All-State.

Gaeddert also was a mainstay for the Bullpup volleyball team, earning AVCTL honors and was an Academic All-State selection in that sport as well, as she carries a 4.0 grade point average.

This spring, Gaeddert is playing soccer for the first time and has developed into one of Class 5A’s top goalies, as MHS is 11-4 on the year and just last week captured the AVCTL Division II title.

Gaeddert plans to major in biology and pre-med.
