Two people were killed as the result of a three-vehicle accident at Kansas Highway 61 and Arapaho Road Wednesday afternoon.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the fatalities as 67-year-old Kathleen J. Lafferty of Inman and 21-year-old Amanda D. Brown of Hutchinson.
A 2009 Toyota RAV4 driven by Lafferty was heading north on K-61 when it crossed the centerline near mile marker 65, about nine miles northeast of Hutchinson. It struck the side of a southbound 2005 Mack tractor-trailer driven by John P. Noftsker of LaSalle, Ill., and then collided head-on with another southbound vehicle, a 2007 Dodge Nitro driven by Brown.
Lafferty’s vehicle came to rest on the east side of the highway. The vehicle driven by Noftsker came to rest on the left shoulder, and Brown’s vehicle came to rest on the west side of the highway.
McPherson EMS personnel transported Lafferty to McPherson Hospital. Brown was transported by Eagle Med to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Noftsker was not injured.
There were no other occupants in the vehicles. All three drivers were using safety restraints.
The McPherson County Sheriff’s Department assisted in working the accident. Inman firefighters and a police officer also responded to the scene.
