Something good is starting to happen here.

McPherson College’s women made it three wins in a row here Saturday, avenging an earlier loss to Haskell with a 74-61 victory to complete play in their own basketball classic with a 2-0 record.

Mac is now even on the year at 4-4 and tonight goes to Bartlesville, Okla., for its final tuneup before the start of KCAC play by taking on Oklahoma Wesleyan at 6:00.

The Bulldogs shook away from the Indians after leading just 34-33 at the half. The difference in the second half was a dragnet of a zone put up by the Bulldogs, who flummoxed the Indians into just 24 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes.

“I knew we wanted to sprinkle it in a little bit in the second half,” Mac coach Cy Rolfs said of the zone. “When we played at Haskell, I was little upset that we didn’t use it more. It was working tonight, so we stayed in it.”

Haskell made just 9 of 37 shots after the break, while Mac warmed up to score 40 points. The Bulldogs averaged 75 points during their 3-0 week, that after struggling mightily to score more than 50 in many games last year.

The bench came up big again with 35 points, led by Brittany Pittas’ team-high 17 as she continues to supply instant offense. Reserve Kaylee Cramer came up with nine points and eight rebounds.

As for the starters, Elice Frey had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Taylor Puttergill scored 11 of her 12 points in the second half and Kt Porter added 10. That balance offset the 23 points poured in by Haskell’s Carolyn Davis.

“We’ve got to keep getting better and be prepared every night mentally to be ready to play,” Rolfs said. “We had some mental slips again with turnovers, but we’re getting better. We just want to keep reducing those turnovers each game.”
