  • Mr. Darrell Vance Halbert, 91, of McPherson, passed away at 5:05 a.m., Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, while in the company of family members  at Cedars Health Care Center, McPherson.
    Mr. Halbert was born Oct. 10, 1920, in Morganville, the son of Homer and Georgia (Vance) Halbert.
    Darrell attended and graduated from the Clay Center schools, Clay Center area.
    He was a member of First United Methodist Church, McPherson.
    Darrell served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a Seaman 1st class in WWII and received the Good Conduct Medal.
    Darrell worked as an employee for W.R. Mill for 34 years, retiring in 1985 and was a farmer and stockman.
    Darrell was a life member of the VFW and a member of the Roving Rebels Camping Group. He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting.
    Darrell Vance Halbert was united in marriage to Marcine Phillips Bengtson on June 7, 1975, in Hutchinson.
    Surviving family members include his wife of more than 36 years, Marcine Donna (Phillips) Halbert, of McPherson; his children, Darrell R. “Dick” Halbert and wife Evelyn of Louisville, Ky.; Larry Halbert of Eufala, Okla., Kurt Halbert and wife Kim of Little River, Alan Halbert and wife Christine of Lyons, and Ruby A. Navarro and husband Tony of Emporia; his step children, Karon Morse and husband Doug of Hutchinson, Donna Ostner and husband John of Little Rock, Ark., Lucky Bengtson and companion Linda McPherson of Gamallel, Ark., and Marica Smith and husband Edward of Little Rock, Ark.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
    Darrell was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Linda Halbert, brothers and sisters, Hildreth Crane, Leonard Halbert, Marie Bruce, Rayburn Halbert, and Lyle Halbert, two grandsons Larry Dean Halbert, Jr. and Dustin Hutchinson, and a granddaughter, Sara Halbert.
    Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at First United Methodist Church, McPherson, with Pastor Mike Marion officiating.
    Committal and burial of cremains will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Bean Cemetery, Little River, with military honors presented by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 and American Legion Post 24, both of McPherson.
    Memorial contributions may be given to Meals on Wheels of McPherson  or Hospice Care of Kansas, and they can be sent in care of the Glidden–Ediger Funeral Home; 222 W. Euclid St., McPherson, KS 67460.
