The McPherson City Commission approved the purchase of five new computers for use in McPherson Police Department vehicles at a cost of $56,351.
Commissioners approved the purchase of the computers, called mobile data terminals, at their regular Monday meeting. The computers provide direct access in the field to information in law enforcement networks.
As not enough funds remain in the department’s equipment budget, supplementary funds will be provided through excesses in the city’s Municipal Building budget. Unused funds originally allocated to improvements to the building will instead be diverted to the purchase of the mobile data terminals.
Funds for the purchase of the computers were requested by the police departments in early budget drafts but did not make the final version.
