Further development of the project, called The Veranda, required the McPherson Planning Commission approve its preliminary planned unit development (PUD) plan. That body conditionally approved the PUD earlier this month, but it still requires acceptance by the McPherson City Commission before planning for construction can begin.
In a pair of study sessions between city commissioners and developers, the majority of the planning commission’s conditions were met: Recent plans conform to International Fire Code regulations, avoid placing sewer services where they would be inaccessible to utility workers and widen streets to meet city standards.
Yet in negotiations between the city and developers, one requirement of the planning commission — the installation of additional sidewalks along the inside of the development — was dropped.
City commissioners will have three options before them during Tuesday’s meeting. They may either send the PUD back to the planning commission for its approval, approve the PUD without further consideration by the planning commission, or disallow the PUD altogether.
During a Dec. 12 study session, commissioners discussed reserving consideration for themselves without further input from the planning commission, although the final decisions can only be made during a scheduled meeting.
