  • Vegetable, fruit gardening topic of horticulture meeting

  • “Vegetable and Fruit Gardening” will be the topic discussed at the Thursday Master Gardener horticulture meeting to be held at the 4-H building starting at 7 p.m.
    Everyone with a gardening interest should plan to attend.
    Ward Upham, K- State’s renowned gardening specialist, will be the guest speaker covering issues such as fertility, planting dates, garden crops that can be grown, irrigating if necessary, insect and weed control, harvesting and general cultural practices. Upham can answer almost any gardening question from years of experience and doing research.
    Cost is $5 per person with no charge for spouses or youth. Proceeds are used to conduct educational horticulture programs under the guidance of Master Gardeners.
    Refreshments will be provided by Sheila’s Garden Market. Programs normally conclude around 8:30 p.m.
    The next Master Gardener-sponsored horticulture meeting will be April 19 on Prairie Bloom Perennial Flowers by Alan Stevens, K-State flower specialist.
    Grain sorghum, summer forage school
    We will have a special crop school on “Grain Sorghum and Summer Annual Forages” at 10:30 a.m. March 30 at the Inman Community Building. Topics will include weed control, production practices, variety types, insect control and utilization. Call to sign up.
    Lunch (Knackies, of course) and materials will be $10.
    Water facts
    Here are some facts about water that stress its absolute importance from a conservation standpoint.
    1. About 97 percent of the earth’s water is salt water.
    2. About two-thirds of the fresh water is frozen in polar ice caps.
    3. About 0.02 percent of nonfrozen fresh water is available on the surface in streams, ponds, or lakes.
    4. About 70 percent of rainfall evaporates.
    5. Half of the water used for public supplies comes from streams or lakes and half comes from underground aquifers.
    6. The manufacturing of one car requires 100,000 gallons of water.
    7. It requires 1,400 gallons of water to produce the food in a meal of a hamburger, French fries and a drink, not counting the water required for processing, transportation, and meal preparation.
    8. Humans require about two quarts of water per day to help digest food, lubricate joints, clean eyes, remove body wastes and cool the body.
    9. The total water supply today is essentially the same as it was centuries ago.
    10. Kansans consume about 1,360 gallons of water each day considering all uses.
