  • Happy hour may be making its comeback.
The Kansas House of Representatives passed an amendment earlier this month to allow reduced prices of alcoholic beverages during a portion of the day. This would reverse a prohibition against the practice that was established in 1985, which restricted reduced prices to an entire day rather than a few hours.
The bill, HB 2550, is currently in the Senate.
Those at Time Out Bar and Grill are not in support of this change.
“I’m not really a big fan of reducing prices up and down,” said manager Adam Sabri. “Customers are used to prices, and it’s kind of confusing.”
If other area businesses embrace the legislation, however, it would be forced to do so as well.
“To stay competitive, we’re going to do what we have to do,” Sabri said.
Joel Santillan, manager and owner of La Fiesta, however, would welcome the change.
“That would be nice,” he said. “We can put the happy hour wherever we want to, instead of being obligated to do something else. It would be better because you find the customers slow to a certain spot of the day. That means more opportunities for the business.”
Managers at Hank's Place and Brick’s Bar and Grill were not available for comment.
Although happy hour was originally banned to prevent individuals from drinking too much too quickly, Capt. Mike Terry of the McPherson Police Department doesn’t think a happy hour would change the average resident’s drinking habits.
“If a person wants to drink excessively, it doesn't matter what they’re paying for it,” he said. “I don’t see that changing a whole lot of people’s habits.”
If legislation is passed, Terry said the department would not change patrol or monitoring practices.
