As area band directors, we are very happy to hear about the new museum music series, and we wish it great success.
However, we felt that we needed to write to express how much we were surprised by the article that ran in the paper recently, "Museum preps for music series" by Ken Ward.
We do not understand why the McPherson Community Band even needed to be mentioned in that article. And when it was referenced, it was done so in a less-than-positive light, in our opinions.  We take issue with the comments in the article about the numbers in our crowds, especially since we know that our involvement got the museum music series “out in the public eye,” which resulted in a huge increase in numbers from when the series was in the back yard of the museum.
But the most surprising thing about the new music series for us (although we are very pleased for the new participants) is how the community of McPherson is now funding it ... funding it well. We constantly asked for monetary support and received nothing in the three years we worked with the McPherson Community Band. And on a related note, the community band didn't fully “disband.” We continue to have a large and active community band just up the road in Lindsborg and continue to grow and be successful there because of the support we receive from the city of Lindsborg and from the people that play in the group, many of whom are from McPherson.
Again, we wish the museum the best of luck with its new music series and we look forward to being in the crowd at the concerts.
