Thanks to a donation to the McPherson Healthcare Foundation, two useful practice models have been purchased for the Obstetrics Department and the Medical/Surgical Unit at McPherson Hospital. Obstetrics received an Infant Venous Access Simulator, which is a life-size infant doll, and the Medical/Surgical Unit received a Geriatric IV Training Arm.
The gift, from donors who wish to remain anonymous, made possible the purchase of these life-like models that can be used by staff in both departments to practice a variety of procedures including venipuncture, catheterization, PICC lines and IV placement.
Director of Obstetrics Lucinda Hiebert said in her department, the doll will be put to practical use in ongoing training for nursing staff.
“We greatly appreciate the thought that went into selecting the infant venous access simulator, which was donated to our department,” she said. “It is important to maintain proficiency in critical neonatal IV access skills. Neonatal resuscitation classes are required by all nursing staff working in the Obstetric Department. This simulation model will be a great addition to skill stations, which are a part of the resuscitation program, allowing us to practice, refine and maintain these necessary skills. We are grateful to these donors for their generous support of our endeavors at McPherson Hospital.”
Chad Clark, executive director, of the McPherson Healthcare Foundation, said the donation will allow the hospital to continue to provide top care.
“Gifts designated for the purchase of specific types of equipment are helpful in that they allow the hospital to stay on the cutting edge of technology and procedures without affecting departmental budgets,” he said. “Such contributions allow the hospital to select the greatest needs at a particular time, and ongoing education is an important component of providing good care to our community.”
