  • Mr. Russell Edwin Skelton, 91, of McPherson, passed away at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2012, while in the company of family members at his home, McPherson, Kansas. Russell enjoyed helping others, loved a good bargain and telling corny jokes. All of Russell's friends considered him a good old guy and was the salt of the earth. Russell was born on his parents’ farm near Rozel, Kansas, on April 24, 1921, the son of Robert Eli and Cecelia (Weber) Skelton. Russell attended Sandhill Elementary School, Zook, Kansas, and attended and graduated from Zook High School, Zook, Kansas. He then attended Fort Hays College, Hays, Kansas. Russell was a member of First United Methodist Church of McPherson, Kansas. He served in the Merchant Marines as a Jr. Engineer in WW II. Russell served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. Russell was a lifelong farmer and worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas; was owner and operator of Drummer Boy Restaurant of Hutchinson and Kansas Broasted Chicken in McPherson, was a security guard for CertainTeed Corporation; and was a school crossing guard for 2 1/2 years in McPherson. Russell was a proud member of the Democratic Party, assisted with the building of the Methodist Church in Rozel, Kansas; helped with teen group and was a member of the Methodist Men at the Church, was a 4-H project leader, helped start up the Webelos at Rozel, Kansas, he served on the Elevator Board at Rozel, Kansas, for six years, was on the Lincoln Township Board Rozel, Kansas for 10 years, and helped his grandchildren start their paper routes. Russell Edwin Skelton was united in marriage to Dorothy Jean Yeager on July 25, 1948 at Radium, Kansas. Surviving family members include his loving and devoted wife of over 64 years, Dorothy Skelton of the home; his children, Susan Kay Geren and her husband Kenneth of McPherson, Kansas, Bryce Skelton and his wife Karol of Topeka, Kansas, and Sally Young and her husband Kelly of Salem, Oregon; his siblings, Virginia Sallee of Great Bend, Kansas, Maxine Nelms of Larned, Kansas, Leo Skelton of Larned, Kansas, and Dale Skelton of Grand Junction, Colorado; his six grandchildren - Andy Geren, Ray Geren and his wife Kate, Tammy Geren, Jeremy Bowers and his wife Tori, Myriah Bowers, Jessica Kirk; his four great-grandchildren, Alisyn Bowers, Jack Bowers, Katrinia Nova, Adam Delort; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Russell was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Verna Moorhead, Erma Skelton, and Zesper Franz; brothers Glenn Skelton and Bob Skelton. Services are going to be private family services. Memorial contributions may be given to First United Methodist Church or Meals On Wheels and they can be sent in care of the Glidden - Ediger Funeral Home; 222 West Euclid Street; McPherson, Kansas 67460.
