The 11th anniversary of Sept, 11, 2001, is approaching and members of the American Legion family of Emil Pinkall Post 140 are planning to gather out in front of the Lindsborg Safety Center on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 11 to remember the horrific events of that day and pay tribute to all of those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.
Mark Casebeer, a member of the Post and one who has never turned down an opportunity to help render honors at the services of our lost comrades from the community, is also a member of an organization called “Bugles Across America.” For the last two years they have conducted a “Sept. 11th Memorial Taps” and grown to over 200 participants making it a great success.
Mark will be participating again with the playing of “Taps” at the exact times of each of the four attacks on the United States and its citizens on that fateful day. Adjusting for the one hour difference in time zones, he will begin at 7:46 a.m. which is when American Airlines Flight 11 was commandeered by terrorists and flown into the World
Trade Center's North Tower. At 8:03 a.m., it will be repeated for United Airlines Flight 175 hitting the South Tower, 8:37 a.m. for American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon, and 9:03 a.m. for United Airlines Flight 93 crashing near Shanksville, Pa., after the passengers on board engaged in a counter attack with the hijackers.
After a moment of silence, a prayer will be given and “Taps” played once again in memory of all who have sacrificed so much in defense of our freedom.
The American Legion invites all to join, but at least pause at those times and remember that freedom is not free.
