Mike Vernon’s history of winning apparently has rubbed off on his Inman football team.
Vernon, making his head coaching debut after having played for a highly successful Bethany program and coaching at legendary Hutchinson High School, was a winner in his Teuton opener Friday night.
And he could probably run for mayor, as it came against longtime rival Moundridge, 38-20.
“The kids played hard and never quit,” Vernon said. “I was impressed with Moundridge. They’re pretty good. We were up 26-7 and they cut it to 26-20. Then we decided to get physical. Our offensive line played great.”
IHS’ Justin Friesen ran for two scores and threw for two more, one to Cody Seiler and the other to Caden Severs. Tyler Cottam and Josh Miller also scored, with Miller gaining 152 yards on 18 carries.
The victory avenged last year’s 40-12 loss for the Teutons, who now have won two of the last three after Moundridge had rattled off a long streak.
Daniel Ratzlaff ran for 91 yards and two scores, while Matt Castor also scored for the Wildcats.
“They ran their stuff and they ran it well,” Vernon said of the Wildcats’ Wing-T. “We played well defensively when we had to.”
Canton-Galva 50,
Central Christian 0
Jeff Savage also was a winner in his head coaching debut, as the Eagles overwhelmed overmatched Central Christian.
Savage, who had pass-happy teams at Central of Burden, didn’t alter his game plan in his C-G debut.
Newcome Cody Savage, the coach’s son, directed the high-octane attack with aplomb, throwing for 346 yards and six touchdowns. Three went to Travis Unruh, two to Austin Bullinger and one to Cameron Webster. Trey Moddelmog also ran for a score, as coach Savage turned to his younger players to close out the game.
The new mentor said he was pleased with the performance, especially the defense as Central couldn’t move at all.
Little River 52,
Wakefield 28
It was close for a half, as the Redskins trailed 12-0 after a quarter and managed to pull ahead 16-12 by the half.
But it was all Little River in the second half, including a 22-8 third quarter.
The Redskins rushed for 293 yards, with Ethan Wright going for 127 and two scores, while Chet Cordell had 124 yards on 15 tries and two rushing scores. He also had a punt return for another score.
Tevin Renken ran for a touchdown and threw to Brady Holler for another.
“It was a tough one, much closer than the score indicates,” Little River coach Paul Dold said. “We were able to capitalize on some mistakes and got lucky with a couple of our mistakes.”
Smoky Valley 27,
Sterling 26, OT
In the best game of the night, Ethan Loder’s TD pass to Holden Hendricks tied the game at 26-all in overtime, then Jarod DeMott won it with a PAT.
Hendricks had caught an earlier TD pass from Loder, who also ran for a score. Curtis Carlson added a rushing touchdown.
“We played really well, it was a good win,” Smoky Valley coach Chris Hattabaugh said.
