  • Mr. George Washington Willard, 89, of McPherson, passed away at 1:45 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, while in the company of family members at McPherson Hospital, McPherson.

  • Mr. George Washington Willard, 89, of McPherson, passed away at 1:45 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, while in the company of family members at McPherson Hospital, McPherson.
    George was born on February 22, 1923, in Emporia, the son of Ralph and Grace (Thompson) Willard.
    George attended a country school near Emporia, and graduated from Emporia High School, Emporia. He later attended and graduated from Elgin Watch Making College, Elgin, Ill.
    George was a member of First Christian Church McPherson, where he was baptized by Pastor Harold Herndon.
    George served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 1st Class, served at and on the USNRS Kansas City, Mo.; Nav Tra Sta Farragut, Idaho; USNH Farragut Idaho; USNH Corona, Calif.; NT and DC Camp Elliot S.D. Calif; USNH S.D. Calif. and received the Honorable Discharge Button, Honorable Service Lapel Button and Honorable Discharge Emblems.
    George was a salesman for a wholesale company and a watchmaker and jeweler. He and his wife, Roberta, owned and operated Brunk Jewelers in McPherson for 24 years prior to selling it to their son, Greg.
    George was a member of the American Legion Post 24; Kansas Jewelers Association, Board Member of KJA; a member of the Regional Jewelers Organization (RJO) and was a McPherson Fire Department volunteer for 25 years.
    George W. Willard was united in marriage to Roberta Jean McGuire on Aug. 14, 1948 at Emporia.
    Surviving family members include his loving and devoted wife of more than 64 years Roberta Willard of McPherson; his daughter Julia Ashenfelter and her husband Mark of El Dorado; his daughter-in-law, Cheryl Bennett Willard of McPherson; his brother Robert Willard and his wife Jerry of Dallas, Texas; his four grandchildren, Jennifer Bonham and her husband Robert of McPherson, David Willard and his wife Andrea of Midland, South Dakota, Brittany Ashenfelter of El Dorado, and Katie Ashenfelter of El Dorado; his two great-granddaughters, Peyton Bonham and Kennedy Bonham both of McPherson; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
    George was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Grace Willard; his brothers, Harry, Glenn, Johnny, and William “Bill” Willard; a sister, Catherine “Kate” Carrick; his son Gregory George Willard; and a grandson Logan Trey Tessler.
    Friends are invited to call on from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, with family present from 3 to 5 p.m. at Glidden-Ediger Chapel, McPherson.
    Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at First Christian Church, McPherson, with Pastor Lynn Scott officiating. Members of the American Legion Post 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 will provide military honors at the church.
    Final resting place will be at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, following cremation.
