  • SALINA — Salina Central’s Tanner Montoy scored four minutes into overtime Thursday to hand McPherson High its first soccer loss of the season, 2-1.
The Bullpups gave up a penalty kick early in the game and trailed 1-0 at halftime before Nick Torres, off a Ryan Horton, pass, knotted the game.
“The goal we scored was a great example of teamwork,” MHS coach Chris Adrian said. “We moved the ball down the field and then Ryan Horton played a beautiful ball to Nick Torres, who matched the quality of the pass with his finish.”
Central was able to get the game-winner, scoring off a play off a corner kick.
“I am extremely proud of the way the team played tonight and am very happy with their performance,” said Adrian, whose team is now 8-1. “This is the game we had been looking forward to for a while. We wanted to see how we could stack up with one of the best 5A teams around. What we showed tonight is that we can compete and hold our own against anybody.”
A year ago, MHS was able to come away with the win, but Central gained some revenge.
“Last year, we were pretty lucky to win, but this year the roles were reversed and I believe we were a little unlucky not to come away with a win but that’s soccer and I am excited to coach this team and can’t wait to see what they can accomplish,” Adrian said.
Central also was victorious in the B-game, 2-0.
MHS hosts Rose Hill Tuesday night, as it’s home for the next five games.
