  • Letter: Reader calls for compromise

  • I read Father Layne’s column of Sept. 22, with probably almost as much sadness as with which he wrote it. Apparently we have a segment of population in McPherson that rejects the concept of free speech and the right to personal viewpoints, which is a keystone to the Constitution of our country. In today’s political climate, I read and hear many views with which I disagree or even strongly reject! And I mourn the loss of great voices like Bob Dole and Bill Clinton who understood and practiced the important art of compromise, which is essential to the healthy practice of governance in a democracy. I am totally frustrated with the no compromise posture of both political parties of today, and the gridlock that results in such polarization! Great challenges face our country today, which can only be resolved with honest debate and then decisive action on the part of all parties. Have we learned nothing from our history? Shall we pick up our swords and go into bloody battle or at the least throw eggs at each other? Or can we carry on civil discourse, and reach a compromise with which all can live? I pray for the latter!
