McPherson College’s football team wasn’t the only one to be involved in a heart-breaker Saturday.
The Bulldog men’s soccer team was leading No. 8-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene 1-0 on a goal by Ricardo Tavarez and headed for an apparent upset victory when the Pioneers’ Alvaro Beltran scored as the clock was running out.
The teams then battled through two scoreless overtimes, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie. MidAmerica had entered the game 6-0-3.
The Pioneers held a slight 21-17 advantage in shots. Mac’s Taylor Parrott had four saves in goal.
Mac is now 4-1-1 on the year.
MIDAMERICA WOMEN 3, MAC 2, OT — Kyndra Ziegler’s goal 2:50 into overtime gave MidAmerica the win.
Mac twice overcame a one-goal deficit to tie. Down 1-0, Mac’s Cheyna Buchman scored to knot the game before the Pioneers’ Brittany Matthews put MidAmerica back up 2-1 five minutes later. Near the end of the first half, Gabriela Navarro scored for Mac to make it 2-2.
MidAmerica had a 19-13 advantage in shots. Molly Whitwell had seven saves in goal for the Bulldogs, now 1-4-2 on the year.
Both Mac teams are home Wednesday against Manhattan Christian, the women playing at 5 p.m. and the men at 7:30.
