For once, McPherson High’s girls tennis team could not overcome the larger-class schools in Saturday’s McPherson Invitational.
The Bullpups did not have any entrants reach the semifinals and wound up taking fifth place with 74 points.
Great Bend took first with 89 points, followed by Salina South (86), Derby (82) and Arkansas City (75).
Below the Bullpups were Hutchinson (66), Larned (62), Newton (57), Hays (56), Garden City (50), Campus (34) and Liberal (31). MHS had a second team that scored 24 points.
MHS received a sixth from Allison Ivers in singles, while Madison Hoffman, from the second team, was 12th and Katherine Geist was 18th.
Emily Ediger and Camry Holle were sixth in doubles, while Taylor Swartzendruber and Brooke Bate were eighth. Cassidy Corrigan and Caroline May were 22nd for the second team.
MHS coach Tyler Brown said losing some close matches bumped the team down a couple of spots.
Arkansas City’s Heidi Klaassen nipped Salina South’s Marissa Mitchell 8-7 (7-4) in the singles final, while Ark City’s Ally Burr and MaKenna Gonzales clipped Hutchinson’s Hannah Weber and Allison Reiser 8-7 (8-6) in the doubles final.
MHS 3RD AT LEAGUE — On Monday, the Bullpups competed at the AVCTL Division III-IV Championships at Wichita.
MHS was third with 45 points, trailing Wichita Collegiate (70) and Winfield (48).
Both doubles teams — Ediger-Holle at No. 1 and Swartzendruber-Bate at No. 2 — took third. Both singles players — Ivers at No. 1 and Geist at No. 2 — were fourth.
