  • HAYS — Revenge was sweet for McPherson Middle School’s football team Thursday.
The Bullpups, who lost at home in the rain to Hays last month, went on the road for a wild 30-24 victory in the rematch on Thursday.
Hays led 16-6 early, with MMS’ touchdown coming from Chris Kirchner. Right before the half, Bullpup coach Cody Stucky reached into his bag of tricks, as halfback TK Mukwindidza hit Brock Malm for a TD pass, with Kirchner adding a 2-pointer to pull MMS within 16-14 at the break.
MMS found itself down 24-14 with five minutes left in the game before starting a charge.
Casen Hoover hit Malm for a TD pass, with Kirchner adding a 2-pointer to make it a 24-22 deficit.
With two minutes left, Kirchner picked off a pass, but after the play the Bullpups were flagged for excessive celebration.
Undaunted, MMS went the final 30 yards, with Hoover scoring on a quarterback sneak with 9 seconds left. Kirchner added a 2-pointer for good measure, as the Bullpups came away with their statement win of the year.
“From a middle school standpoint, it doesn’t get more exciting than this game,” Stucky said. “It was a phenomenal game to be a part of. I have never seen middle school kids make as many big plays as these kids made against an undefeated and very physical Hays team. To score 16 unanswered points in the last five minutes of the game and win it in the last seconds was really something special.  Our defense stepped up and got a couple of huge stops. Hays had us on the ropes and these kids kept fighting and made big plays when they had to.”
MMS, now 4-2, plays at Salina Lakewood Thursday to complete its season.
The B-team came up on the short end, 12-6. Alex Sitts threw a TD pass to Jeff Reed for the MMS score.
