  • Building permits issued during the month of September saw an increase from 2011 levels, with the McPherson Museum project leading way.
    Building Inspector Bret Reynolds informed McPherson City Commissioners during their meeting Tuesday morning 21 permits were issued last month, up six from September 2011. Of those, Reynolds said three were for new additions, 13 were maintenance permits and five were new, which included the foundation of the new McPherson Museum.
    Reynolds said the museum is a big project and that skewed the numbers as far as construction numbers for the city.
    The museum permit carried an estimated project cost of $2.6 million, giving the city $3.68 million in construction costs in September. That is a huge gain over September 2011, where the city only saw $146,207 in new construction.
    Year to date, 155 total building permits have been issued, down slightly from this time in 2011, which saw 162 permits. However, thanks in part to the museum project, new construction costs on the year are double that of 2011, sitting currently at $12.86 million.
    In other business —
    • Representatives from the McPherson County Toy run received permission from commissioners to have their annual parade at 1 p.m. Nov. 24. The fundraiser, entering its 25th year, will begin at Wal-Mart and end at the McPherson American Legion, 401 N. Main St., where they are planning to have a chili feed and auction. Allen Longstaff with the McPherson County Toy Run said last year’s fundraiser helped more than 550 children, and the auction raised $19,000. The action from the commission will provide a police escort for the parade and barricades at the American Legion.
    • Commissioners approved a request from Planning and Zoning Administrator Tom Stinemetze to vacate the east side of a one-block length of Cedar Street just to the south of Woodside. Stinemetze reported the owner of an adjacent property, David Stubbs, McPherson, uses a portion of that street that crosses onto a tract of land owned by Chrome Plus International, Inc., Wichita, to access his property. The city commission accepted the recommendation from the McPherson City Planning Commission to only vacate the eastern half of Cedar at this time, to allow Stubbs access to his property.
