A new parking lot at the McPherson County Health Department is closer to reality following action Tuesday morning by the McPherson County Commission.
The board gave its approval toward future expenditures for the project, which Health Department Director Fern Hess said will ease the deteriorating conditions of the current employee lot west of the building at 1001 N. Main St.
"Not approving (the project) won't make these problems go away," Hess said. "We've done some temporary repair work, but, ultimately, we will need some type of permanent repairs done to at least the west side of the parking lot."
The plan, as presented by Hess, would lay rock in the alley west of the Health Department building, with a concrete parking apron constructed to accommodate employee parking. Additionally, a new parking lot would be constructed on county-owned land north of the building, doubling the amount of parking available at the department from 12 spaces to 24.
Hess estimated the project would cost $83,476 and County Administrator Rick Witte said funding for the project would come from capital improvement funds.
"The county has funds for buildings and facilities that are separate from the general fund," Witte told commissioners. "So you do have sufficient funding in the capital improvement funds."
The project is slated for a fall 2013 to accommodate the McPherson County Public Works Department, which will be actively involved in overseeing the project.
