  • McPherson High's soccer team did not want to disappoint by far the biggest crowd of the season Tuesday night at McPherson Stadium.
    And it didn't.
Spurred on by an energized faithful, Nick Torres scored a pair of first-half goals and then had two more goals in the second half before the defense did the rest in a 4-0 victory over Buhler.
"Even though Nick scored four goals and it looked like an individual dominated the game, it was a team effort," MHS coach Chris Adrian said. "Teamwork is what's scoring our goals."
This was expected to be one of the toughest games for MHS, but Torres set the tone early with a beautiful header for a 1-0 lead, then he worked some magic with Ryan Horton to push the lead to 2-0.
Given MHS' Fort Knox defense this year, two goals seemed like 20.
Torres put the game out of sight in the second half with his third goal. He just missed a fourth with 14 minutes left, but moments later made up for the miss when he found the net after a pass by Cole Krizek. Torres now has scored 27 goals this season.
In most games, the Bullpup defense pushes up, but the unit of Alex Glidden, Peter Horton, Connor Schafer and Adam Bowers, along with goalie Dylan Stos, was called on in numerous situations and responded accordingly. Stos made a leaping save with four minutes left to preserve MHS' ninth shutout in 13 games.
Adrian also was excited by the boisterous crowd.
"That was awesome. I'll bet that was probably the biggest crowd for a soccer game for years," Adrian said. "It was like you thought there was a football game tonight."
The Bullpups improved to 12-1 heading into Thursday's Senior Night game against Valley Center.
In the JV game, the teams played to a 1-all tie. Jeremy Krehbiel gave MHS a 1-0 halftime lead, assisted by Todd Graber. The Bullpups hung on to that lead until 9:05 left when Ryan Burr scored for the Crusaders.
