  • LETTER: My ‘Ode to Steve’

  • During every person’s career, many people cross your path. On the positive side, you learn from some, some support you, some are there when you need them, some know just what to say, and some are just special! Steve Sell has been all of these things to me.

  • During every person’s career, many people cross your path. On the positive side, you learn from some, some support you, some are there when you need them, some know just what to say, and some are just special! Steve Sell has been all of these things to me.
We have been making sideline music and hardwood stories with a little track and field thrown in for more than 30 years. Steve always has been there. The east side of our district is in McPherson County, but the high school is not. Steve has chosen to cover us, and our sports programs, nonetheless.
Like all small schools, we have up periods and down periods. Steve was always there.
He has been on our sideline at state championship football games. When he wasn’t with us, which usually meant his beloved Bullpups were doing the same thing for McPherson, he had story help and the avenue to get pictures all taken care of beforehand.
But this goes beyond Little River and McPherson. Think of all the great McPherson County teams there have been during his run. I will not mention them all for fear I’ll leave someone out, but Steve covered them all. He was there during the great years, and he was there during the down years. His job was to cover the county, and he did it well. It had to be an unbelievable amount of work!
My personal relationship with Steve is one I will always treasure. “How you doing Shaner!” will always ring clear as a bell in my head. Thank you Steve for all you have done for all of us. On behalf of the Little River-Windom communities “Thank You” for being there!
